Museums off the beaten path

A lot of the museums in Amsterdam are famous worldwide – the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum, etc. Even when the rain turned into nice wintery snowflakes it was definitely a museum day, so we decided to check out a few of the smaller museums:

The Allard Pierson Museum is a really amazing archaelogical museum. It was filled with mummies and Etruscan safety pins (nicely contrasted with a modern safety pin). There is also an exhibit of painted Greco-Roman sculptures – painted as they originally were. Once you've seen this exhibition you can no longer imagine the ancient world as pristine white marble.

The Bijbels Museum is an eclectic museum. It's advertised as a repository of historical bible knowledge as well as a building with two 18th century kitchens and "smelling rooms" for the blind, where you can smell different scents like aloe or almond, etc. There is a section on the third temple and on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but all in all it was perhaps a bit disappointing.

I met up with Sebastian and he said that MacBike has offered free bikes for the bloggers. They have a location just out to the right of the Centraal station if you want to stop in.

One of my favourite museums is TropenMuseum in Amsterdam-Oost. It's fairly big and focuses on the former colonies as well as other cultures from tropical lands. It's a lot of fun and they also sponsor world music concerts, film and dance events.
